Scope Storeage

Hi guys,

I plan to sight in two scopes this weekend. Both are 3-9x40.
One is on a Remington 597, the other on an AK-47.

My question is. After all is done, does it matter what position I leave the reticle in when I put the rifles away?

I was thinking that I would write down the "specs" of zero at various ranges and return the reticle to the neutral position for storeage. What do you guys do? Does it matter if I store the rifle with the reticle zeroed to 100 yards?

    It depends on your scope's repeatability: Every experienced shooter knows that different weight bullets, and different brand loads, shoot to different centers of impact. It would be nice to just adjust a scope a few clicks depending on which load you choose to use. With a quality scope, scope adjustments are repeatable. This means that if 20 clicks left will zero when changing loads once, it will always, and 20 clicks to the right will always take you exactly back again. On a cheap scope, each click is variable in adjustment, often a shot or two must be fired before it settles in, and adjusting it back doesn't bring it back to the same place.

    I have scopes that have been left "sighted in" for decades. I would NEVER move the knobs after sighting in. If you have that much confidence in the adjustments, you should have confidence in the internals enough to leave the thing adjusted.

    I have to agree with Mobuck. If you change bullet wieghts, the most important consideration, you may want ot hold a little high or low.

    Thanks for the info guys. I will sight them in and leave them sighted in.

    Can I sight in a scope with say 4x magnification and use it with 8 or 9x magnification without having to adjust the reticle?

    I was planning to leave the AK-47 sighted in at 100 yards because my scope mount is high enough for me to use irons as well.

    What do you guys figure I ought to sight in the .22LR Remington 597 at? It has no iron sights. 50 yards?

    If you change guns all bets are off with a scope set to another gun.

    50 would be fine for the 597.
