Woodworking Tips (M14 Gunstock)

Anyone take a USGI M14 gunstock and successfully fill in the connector assembly/selector gaps?

What technique/filler should I use (including stain-to-match technique), and what pratfalls should I avoid?

    They used to be sold commercially, but I haven't seen them offered for several years. You might try Fred's, Fulton Armory, or SA Inc. No point in reinventing the wheel if you don't have to.

    My walnut filler didn't work out too well (my stock is birch).

    But, if you want to try cutting it yourself, I'd be glad to give you a piece of seasoned walnut. Just email me.

    Thanks fellas.

    But I bit the bullet and went to www.Fulton-armory.com ordered an 'in the white' GI contour M14 stock (that comes without the selector notch, and the connector assembly cutout), and ordered the associated hardware.

    It'll be fun sitting out in the back with my can of stain, and rubbing the tung oil into the grain.

    Kinda sorta like therapy.

    Well, I finished my gunstock. The trigger group would not lock into the receiver, so I had to remove some wood.

    I noticed the receiver is 'stepped' (see photos), and the heel of the receiver was not in contact with the stock.

    So, I removed wood here (the stepped area)

    And removed wood here (beneath the G&H Mount). This area of receiver is at a 30deg. angle..so I had to be careful

    As you can see in the photos below, the heel of the receiver is now flush with the stock

    I decided to finish the stock W/O sanding it..for some reason, I liked the 'raw grain' effect..

    By removing wood 'from the top', I was able to get the trigger group to close with just a tad more snugness than on my M1 Garand (it has old wood).

    One more item, the magazine brace that I had to install was screwed tight into the stock. Magazine was a devil to insert. So..

    After inserting the magazine the stock screws were able to take almost another turn! The mag brace is what 'trues' the magazine beneath the receiver. Hope you enjoyed the photos. Best, Joe

    What kind of scope mount is that and how well does she work? Single point, yes?

    The mount is a non-commercial (made by Army Weapons Command only) setup for using the Griffin & Howe M1C and USMC-1 scopes and bases. Sorta like a stopgap system to fit the earliest M14's with the glass that was available for distribution to troops at the time of the adoption of the M14.

    The return to zero is phenomenal. And, yes, it's single point system (there's a vertical and horiz. tongue to mate with the receiver).

    The AWC mount is steel, and it fit to my receiver W/O any mods. Best, Joe
