    It's whats called a "Needham Conversion". Your information is essentially correct about it's use by the Fenian's.

    GOOGLE is your friend. Do searches on "needham conversions" and "fenians", for more info.

    It looks to be in nice shape, but obviously "cleaned", unfortunately.

    It was "cleaned" when I acquired it and the stock was broken. I thought it interesting and I was pretty sure I could fix the stock. I picked it up at a low price and repaired the stock. I've just left it white, seemed better than a re-browning. Maybe some day a plum brown finish.


    After a bit more research I believe I'll leave it "as is" I have way to many other projects going on anyway Most of the examples I found where obviously "white" though I did find a few that had at some time been blue/browned, probably much later, Thanks all for the steering in the "right direction" The weapon is completely functional with very little pitting in the barrel

    DO NOT "brown" anything. They were in the white.
