half stock F Reynolds ,New York

I have a Half stock Percussion rifle ,1860-65 heavily engraved with silver forward site , silver fore stock end cap , lying dog engraved on brass patch box, engraved Brass trigger guard , single trigger , engraved brass star on cheek piece ,silver thumb spot behind hammer unknown caliber .43 ? engraved on top of barrel New York F Reynolds , dual gold bands and engraving on octagon 37" barrel ,brass capped wooden push rod I am interested in finding out if this gun is related to General F Reynolds of the Union army who died in Gettysburg , Not if this was his gun but rather if they were made using his name ? also value and appropriate venue for sale condition scale 1-10 this gun would rank a 5-7 ,under side of barrel marked Remington

    I found this interesting and did a quick search. I found a couple interesting references that may help you. Nothing as to whether the F Reynolds engraving refers to the Civil War general

    RIFLE DESCRIPTION
    42 caliber, 37" octagon barrel with a very good bore that appears to be back bored slightly. Top of barrel is engraved in old English characters "F. Reynolds N. York" and the bottom of the barrel is stamped "REMINGTON". This rifle is beautifully embellished and remains in very fine condition. The back action lock is engraved in relief floral scroll with a scene of a walking deer and is engraved along edge of lock beneath hammer "F. REYNOLDS". The barrel retains about 80% original brown finish blending with a smooth brown patina. The barrel breech and tang show lovely relief floral scroll engraving with double gold bands at breech. The lock is mostly a gray patina and remains quite smooth with a little light surface oxidation. The stock is of walnut and rates very good plus with 90% of its original finish remaining and with just light wear to the checkered wrist. The German silver furniture is spectacular. The patchbox is wonderfully engraved with a scene of dogs chasing an elk surrounded by the finest 19th century relief scroll. The cheekpiece features a lovely inlaid American eagle in a defiant pose and a stylized deer head is inlaid just ahead of buttplate. The sideplate is quite fancy and beautifully engraved as is the triggerguard, toeplate and escutcheon plate ahead of sideplate. All German silver bears a lovely untouched patina. The rifle is equipped with a narrow German silver blade front sight, there is no provision for a rear barrel sight and the original adjustable folding tang peep sight is present. Rifle is equipped with original adjustable double set triggers and original brass tipped ramrod is in place. A very fine American percussion half stock rifle.     Thanks to all for fast replies , I had found the auction mentioned, last night and was trying to locate any further information available , Yes it's the same rifle ,a little lower on the condition scale but not a lot ,other differences this one has a lying dog on the patch box rather than a dog chasing an elk, the barrel is the same with the twin gold bands and silver mounted front site and mounted silver fore cap , I have searched for and not found a lot of information , I will post pictures, and this gun is for sale ,I would love to know how it ended up in east Tn , I will try to contact the previous owner tomorrow for more information . I will let you know I purchased this F Reynolds and a double barrel heavily engraved 12 gauge PARKER (which is not for sale )from an auction for less than $600.00 for both guns The Reynolds from the auction and the Parker from the parking lot , Again Thanks to all for your help and watch for this gun to be posted for sale asap with photos to be posted to this site tomorrow for your enjoyment , Also just to mention many modern semi automatics and revolvers were purchased at this auction for more than I paid for this special gun ,from what I can tell it is 150 years old and very rare , Thanks again .....
