1911 Full Length Guide Rod

I have a Colt commander and would like to know the pro and cons of installing a full length guide rod. Will it help make it shoot tighter groups, less slide wear or cause it to jam?

    To your specific questions, no, no, and no.

    The FLGR will add an ounce of weight under the barrel where it will steady the gun A LITTLE BIT.
    It will make takedown a little more complicated depending on the type.

    My gunsmith likes them, says they make the gun run "smoother" and the recoil spring last longer. So I let him put them in my "range guns." But my Commander does not have one or need it that I can tell.

    But, but, but all the cool kids got one in their Commanders. Also just the regular full length guide rod ain't all that special. What you really want is a Harrt's Mercury Recoil Reducer with a guide rod buffer.

    Almost as worthless as a recoil Buffer. Causes much harder take-down for cleaning [:(!]just another way to help you throw your money away . Buy ammo with the money you would spend on a guide rod and practice this will make your group size smaller. [^]Just like fancy do dads on your car "use you 1911 like John Browning designed it " Chrome Don't Get You Home.

    Perry hit the nail on the head. As a smith I don't recommend them. First thought they were good in concept, then realized in reality not worth it. Same as those rubber buffer pads that shred to pieces and gum up the slide function..useless in my opinion. My Commanders don't use em...

    Pros: A little more weight at the front of the gun will **slightly** decrease muzzle flip. That (in theory) could reduce your time between shots.

    Cons: More cost. Harder to disassemble gun for regular maintenance.

    Will it help make the GUN shoot tighter groups?: Definitely not.
    Will it create less slide wear?: No.
    Will it cause the gun to jam?: If the part is OK and installed right, probably not.

    Will it help YOU shoot tighter groups? In theory, more weight up front will reduce wobble and steady your sight picture. That's one reason why match shooters like to add weight to the front of their guns. In practice, I doubt this little bit will make any NOTICEABLE difference.

    Colt Commander isn't really a "match" type gun anyway. If you're shooting target competition maximum accuracy is essential. But in a defensive type gun, shrinking your groups by a fraction of an inch isn't really going to change anything anyway.

    I went on a kick and removed the fgr's from 2 of my 3 1911's.
    I think the std guide rod gives the slide a little more play making it more reliable.
