need to find my lady a trap gun

ok i am trying to get my lady into shooting/ trap and trying to find her a nice small 20ga gun. Now i have not really shoped for shotguns in 10+ yrs. Now it needs to be a smaller length due to her stature. 5'0 120lbs. and i dont want something that wont beat her to death after 2 rounds of trap. also dont want to spend an arm and a leg. I have looked at the mossy youth bantam 20ga nice gun but would like other options.

i am fairly familar with mossy 500's, Rem 1100(really not a fan of price on 1100 these days and reliablity)


Let me know what u think will fit the bill

BTW CAN BE A USED GUN. if i can find everyday at gun stores

    Spend a little money --Beretta Technis (spelling).
    Good recoil system for the ladies .
    Do not buy a pump for her :recoil would be a little much .

    I really think that aside from your initial, and likely warranted reservations about some newer 1100's, a good used one would make a great starter. While I feel that you would be best served with a Berretta , Benelli or Franchi, it's hard to argue cost considerations. Couple that with the fact you don't KNOW she is going to stick to it, and you might have a better loss cut scenario with the Remington than the italian guns.

    well thank you for the replies. yes i am not sure if she will stick with it at all. she has never fired any kinda of a gun at all. and i am leaning torwards a 1100. And most deff cannot justify a Italian for her yet. if she sticks with it prob get her a nice O&U. However in my exp having hunted and grown up with 2 the older 1100's(80-early 90's) they seemed to be a tad touchy on relaiblity. tho my dads has had a literally million rounds thru it. his only had a few minor parts fail- springs, o-rings and such. but for the ammount she may shoot it i prob can beat one.

    anyone know what they go for in gun/pawn/ or private sales. something i can put my hands on before i buy(no online sales)

    Have you thought about a Remington 870 ? Simple, reliable, inexpensive, light. A used one should be easy on the bank. Just remember, whichever gun you settle on, it HAS TO FIT THE SHOOTER !

    Well, first off, since you say she is brand spankin' new to firearms-- myself would introduce her slow and easy with a .22 rifle. Seen more than a few, even grown men, get all flinchy from noise, muzzle blast, & recoil when starting out with too much gun. A persons size does matter some, yet this way you can judge her grit and determination, too. The main deal is she enjoys herself and sees her own progress, saddled with your praise and helpful critic when called for before poor habits sink in.

    Many areas have public ranges that have rentals-- may look into that before making a choice to purchace? A youth model for a first shotgun coupled with lite loads sounds the key, yet know way of telling if a any guage will be too much or not until she trys it.

    Both my wife and my daughter shoot trap with an 1100. Started out with a LT20 and moved up to a 12GA with a shorter stock. I recently had a pinched nerve in my back that affected my right arm/shoulder. Once it was "fixed", I found that my usual pump trap gun still had more felt recoil than was tolerable. I shot the second round with my daughters 12GA 1100 and was amazed at how mild the recoil was. I went on to shoot 3 more ronds with no ill affects. If she can handle the weight of the 12GA 1100, the recoil should not be a problem.

    Whatever you decide on I'd say buy used, not new. That way if she loses interest you can always sell the gun for about what you bought it for. Assuming that is that you didn't pay above market value for it.

    Running out to buy a shotgun that isn't fitted, in a 20 ga. and not a trap gun is sort of putting the cart before the horse.

    If you truly want to help her develop an interest in shooting trap, I'd suggest asking your friends or buddies at the trap range about borrowing a semi-auto trap shotgun in a length that your 'lady' could at least attempt to try to shoot. Do some looking around for an appropriate shotgun and NOT a 20 ga. Do NOT look at pump shotguns simply because they are cheap. She will lose interest after the first couple of shots.

    Get a good semi-auto trap shotgun in 12 ga. with a proper recoil pad in the length that fits her but only after she states flat out that she is REALLY interested. There are several brands of 12 ga. 'lite' recoil shot shells developed for trap shooting. These are not just for women either, lots of guys shoot them routinely.

    Handled correctly, you could have the very best shooting partner for a long time. Bad decisions now will result in a 'no chance' scenario.
