Anybody know this maker?
I have this old black powder rifle that I got at an auction for 30 dollars. It is not in good shape but I hang it over the fire place. Can any one tell me who the maker is,the only marking is a H with a arrow through it. It has a set trigger and octagon barrel. The caliber is bigger than 50 cal because a 50 cal ball rolls down barrel. This old gun is heavy and I would not want to pack it very far in the woods. The hammer works fine when cocked and the set trigger works also. THANKS FOR ANY HELP----JON

Belgian made...marks are proof marks...most likely a copy!![:)] nice wallhanger... 0 -
I don't see any Belgian proofmarks in the photo. The H pierced by an arrow is probably a trademark of the lock maker, as by the percussion era most gunsmiths used ready made locks and other hardware. The actual maker if marked is usually on the top barrel flat, or sometimes on underside of barrel under the forestock.
PS: If you haven't, do yourself a favor and measure down the bore with a rod and then down the outside to breech plug: It's not unusual to find these still loaded!0
