calibers of Colt SAAs
I was wandering if newer calibers can be used in calibers like 44-40 ?

NO THIS is one of a number of OLD School Cartridges made around the turn of the 19th century so a Cowboy could have a pistol and rifle that could shoot the same cartridge. If you want a modern caliber buy a modern Caliber. Straight walled pistol cases in revolvers are sometimes OK. One pistol would be 357 Mag then you can shoot 38 short Colt 38long Colt or 357 Mag one other would be 44 Mag and shoot 44 Russian 44 special and 44 Mag. I dont want to sound RUDE but buy a book Cartridges of the world. and look at all Spec's on one cartridge and then compare with the other cartridge you might want to try. You can normally use a short cartridge in longer chamber like a 273/4 inch shot shell in a 3 inch Chamber However this can also have exceptions . like bottle neck Rifle cartridges . the Best Rule is use ONLY what the gun is chambered. 0 -
It depends on when your SAA was made. If your gun dates before 1899, you should use only Blackpowder loads. If you use modern ammo, you stand a good chance of damageing both th gun and yourself. If the gun dates between 1/1/1899 and about 1918, be carefull to use "cowboy" ammo because early smokeless powder was much weaker than the powders sold and used today. 0
