Harrington & Richardson top break revolver

my wife inherited a H&R top break revolver and I haven't been abel to ID it with the info on Blue Book but saw some postings here with good info

its top break; auto eject; 6 rd; top of barrel has H&R with Worcester Mass USA; left side-.32S&W.CTGE.; H&R target logo on grip; 41/2" barrel; 976 on inside chamber/cylinder; 372976 on grip base

any insights would be great--thanks

    H & R made a Model 976 revolver, I though it was a .22 rather then a .32 though. Try GOOGLEing, "h & r model 976" and see what you come up with.

    You have an H&R "AUTOMATIC EJECTING" revolver. These were made from approx. 1885 until sometime in the mid 1940's, in various Models and variations within the models. With that serial number and that Barrel rib stamping it is a 3rd Model, 3rd Variation and was made from 1913 thru 1915. The serial number indicates it was probably made close to the middle of the run - so, 1914 is a good guesstimate of the year produced. It was made well into H&R's smokeless powder era (began 1905) and IF safe to shoot should be able to handle current factory loaded .32 S&W and .32 S&W LONG. Don't advise shooting any other cartridges in it (other than .32 Colt New Police - short and long - same size and power levels as the S&W rounds - main difference being flat nosed bullets.) The breech face of the cylinder, the star extractor and the barrel latch should be marked with the last three digits of the serial number. The full serial number will be found on the butt strap (where you found yours) and under the top strap (remove cylinder to see it) and possibly stamped into the grip frame under the left grip panel.
    Since the 29th Ed. "THE BLUE BOOK..." has had a revised Harrington & Richardson, Inc. section, which lists much of this info as well as updated retail values.
    The Model 976 was a "deluxe" 9 shot, .22 lr "Western Style" DA/SA, side loading and ejecting with ejection rod revolver made from 1977-81.
