460 S&W Hunting Ammo
I am curious if anybody has experience using this caliber for deer/elk hunting and what you would recomend for factory ammo. I am looking for something that is capable of 25-200yd shots with good penatration and minimal drop. Also has anybody used the 200 gr Hornady FTX, I like it because of the velocity and accuracy but am affraid it would not penetrate deep enough.

I use the 200 gr. FTX in a 44mag Contender. I'm happy with it's performance on deer. Longest shot I've taken on a Whitail deer to date has been 80yds. The bullet lodged under the skin on the far side, and the deer ran about 35yds. It was a double lung shot, and the deer weighed about 140 dressed. 0 -
One of the gun mags did a write up a few months ago on Federal's line of Premium ammo...The 460 came with a 300 grain Swift A-frame or a 275 fr barnes, both of which which are plenty tough enough for elk, moose etc...check out their website and see what they offer. Cheaper than dirt had the A-frame loads for sale for 56 bucks/20. Winchester Supreme with the Partition or Dual-bond bullet is also ready-made for big stuff like elk or moose, and will be a bit less in price than the Federal.
The only .460 loads I have shot were 250 gr Hornady xtp-mag bullets in handloads from a compadre who owns a S&W .460.(I have a Super Redhawk.454)I must say the recoil for the faster .460 (ported gun)was about the same as the unported Ruger .454; not bad, but not fun for an all-day session. I would use the xtp on deer, but not on an elk; I think the a-frame/partition style is better suited for the bigger stuff than a cup-n-core like the xtp (or ftx for that matter).0
