Remington 887 NitroMag Tactical review
I posted this over in General Discussion, but I figured I'd repost it here with a better title to aid in topic searches.
I recently got to fire a friend's Remington 887 Nitromag Tactical and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I know Remington's earned itself a pretty bad reputation as of late, but from what I've experienced with this gun, I'd recommend it.
Despite its blocky appearance, the Remington 887 Tactical holds and handles really well. I was able to wrap my hand around the fore end with no problem or strain and the length of pull was just fine.
Felt recoil with 1325 fps 00 buckshot (2 3/4" shells only - no 3" or 3 1/2") was non-existent and was able to bring the gun back on target quickly and easily. Mind you, I was shooting at a stationary target at about 15 yards (not very far, I know), so I'm not sure how well this translates into situations where a moving target like clays or birds is concerned.
The fiber optic sight was a nice touch since it's easier to see in low-light conditions than a brass bead. The rail attached to the top of the receiver acted as rear sights, making it very easy to aim.
The action on the gun was not as smooth as let's say a Wingmaster or a Benelli Nova. It's a little tighter, but not so tight that it takes an act of Congress to rack it. If the Wingmaster is a "100", I would grade the 887 anywhere from 89-92.
It fired nice tight groups, ejected the spent shells well clear of the chamber, and was generally a pleasure to shoot.
I only fired about thirty rounds through it, so obviously my test sample was limited. But with that in mind, my shoulder felt fine afterward. Not even the barest hint of soreness.
I can't comment on its ruggedness since I only had my hands on it for about fifteen minutes (I was going for speed, not accuracy), but I would have to say that my initial impression of it is very positive.
Overall, I would have to give the Remington 887 Nitromag Tactical a rating of 90 out of 100.
Pros: well balanced, almost no felt recoil, looks cool.
Cons: action is a little stiff, slide can bite if your finger's in the wrong place, forearm a tad too bulky.
