Too aggresive cleaning the Glock?
I recently purchased a used Glock 22(gen 2). It was pretty dirty, confirmed by the original owner admitting to not ever cleaning it. I broke it down to clean it out. The inside of the slide was kind of caked with a black material. I took some solvent and a brush and started brushing away. Needless to say, a lot of the black material was removed. After rinsing and oiling, what was visable was metal that had a light bronze color. I used a regular cleaning brush made of similar material that you would clean the bore with.
What have I done!

Don't worry the bronze colored stuff is the original grease that the Glock is shipped with. Sounds like it had never been cleaned. Your not going to hurt a Glock by cleaning it. 0 -
There is nothing wrong with your Glock. Glocks that have been fired quite a bit tend to show wear like that inside the slide. After you do a functions check to ensure it is working properly, take it out for a test fire and if it still fires accurately, there is nothing to worry about. I have put about 2,000 rnds through my G19 and there are spots on the slide that are worn as well. 0 -
Sometimes the bronze bore brush you used to scrub the slide will leave that sort of color on the cleaned area, it'll happen with brass scrub brushes as well. I get that discoloration on slides, Ar-15 bolts, revolver frames, etc. when they get a good scrubbing with a bronze bore brush. Just clean it well with solvent and polish with cleaning rags and it'll eventually fade away. 0 -
I know a guy who put over 50,000 rounds through his (original) Glock 17 without cleaning it.
Its sort of a point of pride for him that he doesn't clean it.
Anyway, you're not going to hurt the gun by cleaning it with a bronze gun cleaning brush and solvent.
Don't worry about it. As mentioned, the bronze/brass brush is softer than the gun steel and you may have just rubbed off some bronze onto the metal.
If the gun works fine it **IS** fine.0 -
Thanks all! Learned some new stuff, and feel much better about the gun. 0 -
