best bullet for 243 1in 10 twist
I've got a pre 64 winchester 243 Varmint with a 1 in 10 twist and would like to know the best weight bullet for long range accuracy

I would say that with the 1 in 10 twist rate, it would be anything from 90-100 grain...that is what I would say. However, I have an early 77 MK II in stailness with the skeleton stock, and it also loves the 55 grain ballistic tips. I have not checked the twist rate in it, but believe it is 1 in 10. Actually, it likes the 85 grain Barnes XLC-BT, and the TSX too, and does decent with the Remington 100 grain Core-Lokt.

What do you mean by "long range" and by "accuracy"? Almost ALL factory .243 barrels are 1-10 twist so they will stabilize bullets from 55 to 110 grains.Best accuracy is found with quality bullets, cases, powder, testing with careful attention to details and a properly set up rifle with a good scope. All bullet weights have produced sub MOA accuracy when these details are accounted for. Testing in your barrel will tell. Heavier bullets tend to do better at extreme ranges due to better BC resulting in less wind drift. 0 -
My 1963 M-70 Varminter likes the 85 grain Sierra HPBT, 47.5 grains of H4831, and a CCI large rifle primer in Winchester cases. Now my definition of "long range" may be different from yours, I am satisfied hitting a prairie dog at 400 yards (if I do my part). 0 -
A 243 Win with 10" twist is meant for a 100 grain flatbase spitzer.
If you want to shoot a high BC target bullet with boattail, you might need to go a little lighter. Berger says his 90 gr boattail target (not VLD) is good for a 10" twist.0 -
I bought a bunch of the 85 gr Nosler spire points before everything went to ballistic tips, on top of H380, played around with grains of powder. Shoot great out of my 20" #1 RSI as well as my 24" M700. CCI 250 Primer. I would assume the ballistic tips would do as well. Heard some bad things form the sirocco out of 243. 82gr sierra HPBT also a great one. 0 -
My Mk II must have been stablemate to tsr's.
Handled everything from 58 to 110 with fine accuracy. Never had another rifle that did that well with that wide a range. 1 in 10 with the .243 may just be an ideal combination?0 -

Not exactly, a 1-10" twist won't stabilize Sierra 95 gr. SMK's or 105's. It won't stabilize Hornady 105 A-max's either. However, due to whatever reasons, the Berger 6mm 95 Grain Match Target VLD. will normally stabilize in a 1-10" twist if pushed hard. Even though Berger recommends 1-9" minimum. That is about the best BC you will get to work in the 1-10" twist. If you aren't sure your rifle will stabilize those then they have the 90 gr. target BT's. Otherwise, I'd recommend Hornady 87 gr. V-max's or Nosler 85 gr. BT's. If you push those to 3300 fps (which is at the top of the pressure charts even for slow powder) the bullets remain super-sonic to 1000 yds. Same with the 95 gr. BT's pushed to 3200. (@ std. sea level)

I have one of those model 70 Varmints in .243 that I bought around 1962. The first load I tried in it was 40 gr. of H4895 with the 75 gr. Sierra hollow point. It shot so well that I never changed to anything else. 0 -

+1 on the 75 grain. My 243 with a 1 in 10 loves the 75 grain remington accu tip boat tail.0
