Selvidge Tennessee Rifle

My cousin and farming partner Wes Selvidge is attempting to locate a cap lock Tennessee Selvidge rifle. The only information we've been able to find is a fairly extensive article in Ned Roberts book "Muzzle Loading Cap Lock Rifle" and the Selvidge gunsmith shop relocated to Knott's Berry Farm here in CA.

    I am not sure what you are asking. Can you be more specific?

    It sounds like your friend, Wes Selvidge is a relative of a gunbuilder from some distant time in the past? Is that true?

    Is your friend seeking a specific antique rifle, made by a relative from the past or is he looking for a new-made gun from the current folks at the gun shop in California? Or, is he seeking any example of either an antique gun or recently-made gun?

    I am assuming that your friend has contacted the current Selvidge gun shop, located in Buena Park at the Knott's Berry Farm theme park. If so, what assistance were they able to offer? If not, they may be able to provide som direction.

    Other means to an end here are the geneology boards on the Internet. Just in a quick Google search using the search string, Tennessee Selvidge rifle (without quotes), I found this link that makes mention of the Selvidge shop near Cleveland, Tennessee:

    I cannot offer any specific information whatsoever to help you, but I can make the few suggestions I am making here. Also if you can be more specific, perhaps some of others here can help you, but their help may be limited by not knowing much about the whys and wherefores of your friend's earch. Therefore a bit more information from you might be helpful.     There are longgun makers around today who are expert at building rifles and have a good knowledge of regional gunsmiths/gunbuilders from the past and more modern times, up to now. Find and contact these guys for help. I know they will be pleased to assist your friend.

    There is a rendevoux outfitter called Track of the Wolf and another called Dixie Gun Works, whose "technical" people may be able to further direct your friend's search. Call these people and begin a dialogue.

    It might take some time to get through to the proper expert authority at the museum, but they might be able to help.

    There are other gun forums on the Internet that have sub-forums that specifically deal with flintlock and caplock weapons. Try The Firing Line

    and do an Interntet search for gun forum (with and without quotes) and see if you can get some assistance there.

    All this is off the top of my head in just a very few moments of typing and your pal may have already reasoned this (and beyond) for himself, but out-of-the-box reasoning and varying Internet search strings can take you a long way.

    My husband is a direct descendant of the gunsmith John Conway Jefferson Selvidge. We know of a signed (engraved on the barrel)black powder "Kentucky Longrifle". Are you looking to buy or just looking for information?
