40SW and 9mm luger use different case rim sizes.

So unlike some other caliber conversions, you can't just swap barrels and magazines. In GENERAL this sort of conversion usually requires swapping the entire upper/slide assembly of a pistol, plus a new magazine.

With this gun in particular, I don't know if the magazine well on the ultra-CDP is wide enough to accept a 40SW magazine/round. A single-stack gun designed for 9mm luger may not be.

You could call Kimber customer service and ask them this very question (Do the two guns share the same frame, and is a conversion possible). I'm sure they'd set you straight, and *if* the conversion were possible (which I kind of doubt), they'd probably also be able to sell you an upper/slide unit.

i don't know about kimbers, but it was an easy swap for my fusion cbob.
beantown is right, needs a complete upper; barrel, slide , ejector and spring. and a new mag.
that probably wasn't much help..........

I feel it important to add this piece of information, as I am sure that someone will bring it it up.

The 1911, needs to have the proper slide and barrel for the conversion. It needs the extractor, located precisely. I say this, because with the Glock's, and I believe Springfield XD's, all you have to do is change the barrel, and magazine. Yes, the Glock slides for the 9mm, and 40 S&W appear to be the same.

I agree with the 1911 conversion. You'd need (at least) an entire new slide and barrel to go from 9mm to 40SW.

But I don't think what you are saying about the Glock pistols is true (can't speak to the XD). My understanding is that even though the external dimensions are similar, internally, the 40SW and 9mm Glock slides are not the same. The 9mm vs 40SW breech faces are different, and I believe the barrels are also of different diameters (meaning you couldn't just switch stock ones).

If you want to, at least with Glocks, you can drop in a specially designed 9mm "conversion" barrel into a 40SW gun and swap the magazine to run 9mm from a 40SW gun.

Even there, its not really a true "conversion". The reason is that even though the smaller 9mm rounds can still fit into the larger 40SW breech face, being held in place by the extractor, the 40SW extractor isn't really "tuned" for 9mm cases. So the cases won't get tossed out quite as hard nor as far.

The barrel swap conversion is fine for training and I believe it generally runs well, but it probably isn't ideal if you need maximum reliability, and I think at least one of the manufacturers of these conversions suggests that its for practice only.

I'm pretty sure there is NOT a simple drop-in barrel conversion to go from 9mm to 40SW in a Glock, for the reasons listed above (larger diameter barrel and breech face necessary for 40SW).

If you wanted to go from 9mm to 40SW in a Glock, I think you could do this in *some* cases by swapping the entire upper (slide and barrel) plus magazine.

One potential issue there is that the older Glock 9mm frames weren't built as strong as the ones designed for 40SW, which contain an extra pin to help mitigate against increased recoil forces from 40SW.

So if you were to drop a 40SW upper onto an older 9mm Glock lower, the increased recoil from the 40SW could eventually damage the 9mm frame.
