GAS TRAP butt plate

Can anybody tell me the dimensions and or weight of a Gas trap Garand buttplate. I have a few (5). But I am unable to find out any information as so few have been seen. I need to know how to tell the difference between the real thing and a reproduction. I have seen repros but they are marked repro on the back. Mine have no markings but they are parkerized I have read that some have drawing #'s but also that some didn't. I have asked a few M1 collectors that I know. And they can't give me a definitive answer. One thing they all did say is that if they are a repro they are the best they have seen. I just want to know for sure. Thanks

    It's probably more accurate to call them "no trap" buttplates, as they were used not only on all gas trap rifles, but also on early gas port rifles. Making your quest even more difficult is the fact that they were produced by both Springfield Armory & Winchester, & I see no way to tell the difference between makers.

    JC Harrison's book (Collecting the Garand II) has a diagram of the "no trap" buttplates, & it appears that the WRA is lighter in color than the SA. But, he provides no information on markings that would differentiate between them, or between original manufacturer & repros.

    How about some photos? The first 25,000 butt plate had the number C-46012 stamped inside them while the remaining 45,000 did not. There should be 16 diamonds in the row just below the upper screw hole and some of these plates are blued and the screw holes were very distinct from the later trap-type plates. We can't tell what you have if we can't see it. I can tell you that the newest no-trap plate would be 70 years old so if you have five and they look like new then chances are that they are new...New production!
