shipping a rifle to myself.

Going bear hunting in Alaska. I would like to ship my rifle out ahead of me. Can I ship it to my destination in my name without having to enlist the help of a FFL? Will UPS allow it?

    Yes you can.

    BATFE regualtions specifically allow for this:

    (B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

    Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

    Mark, then this also means ANY firearm for any lawful activity. I am flying to Mo to see my brother so I can ship my pistol in care of him, Yes?

    So long as no TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP takes place, no FFL is required for long guns or handguns. Rifles and shotguns ONLY may be MAILED by US Mail. You can send yourself a handgun, but will have to be next day air air UPS/ FedEx, which is pricy. Would go to Mcaso, in care of Bcaso, or to Blue Lake Lodge, HOLD FOR Elkdropping. Recipient is not supposed to open package, but hold for you in either case.

    I've done this a few times after buying a C & R out of state and not wanting fly with it. Any time you mail a firearm you're initially at the whim of someone who, if they do not know what they are doing, will default to "I don't think you can do that" and they'll then ask a supervisor who's first question is usually "are you an FFL?". When the "no, but ..." starts they usually listen and pop out the same response. Just a suggestion, but don't try to mail the thing when you're in a hurry or pressed for time and have the ATF regulations ready.

    UPS seems to handle firearms better than FedEx, just my own experience - don't know about USPS on long guns though.

    Now Alaska isn't a contiguous state ,does
    that matter.

    That works fine, just be sure the party on the receiving end does not open the box until you arrive. Contiguous state is a left over from the days when buyers of long guns could only make an out of state purchase from dealers in the states bordering their own. This became a non factor in 1986 when the law was changed and allowed long guns to be purchased from dealers in any state as long as this does not conflict with state laws.
