Win 70

I'm looking at a Winchester 70 purchased in 1983, are there any significant differences with the same rifle manufactured in 2008+ that I should take into consideration?

    Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.

    Yes there are some significant differences.

    The first is the extractor. The 1983 vintage, has a Remington 700 type extractor, where the 2008 model has the Pre-64 Model 70 type, Mauser claw extractor. The latter is a controlled round feed.

    Secondly, your 1983 vintage was made in New Haven, and the 2008 are made in the Carolina's.

    The quality on either does not come close to the Pre-64.

    Your 1983 is most definitely a post '64 rifle and shouldn't have the claw extractor. However, if you look at the bolt face there are different types. Both of my post '64's have a solid extractor cut in the face of the lug. Remington's extractor is a clip-like thingy that fits into a groove cut inside the steel rim around the face. The Winchester has a slide over solid piece retained by ball and spring in a groove. Both of those types have the solid rim around the face though. The CRPF has that type of extractor but the bottom of the rim is removed so case heads slide straight up into the extractor as they are being chambered. CRPF stands for Controlled Round Push Feed.

    And of course the Controlled Round Feed has the bar like extractor attached to the bolt by a retainer in a groove cut in the bolt body. The nose of which extends just out in front of the bolt face. They are only supposed to chamber a shell from the magazine but you can 'ram' these over the head of your case to feed them if you have to. The resultant scars in your brass will attest to you that you don't want to do that all the time. These will extract a tougher shell than the CRPF's will. But, the CRPF's give the best of both worlds because they can feed singly or from a magazine. Feeding from a magazine they maintain the same control as the Control Round Feed.

    So, those are pretty much the three types of extractors you will see on a Winchester 70, PRF, CRF and CRPF.

    I have a 70 "Classic" built in the 90's. I assume this is a CRPF--is that correct? Is there a source of new parts for this rifle since the real Winchester is defunct? Numrich doesn't have much. Is this rifle an orphan? With the BOSS dialed in, it is an accurate rifle.

    If it has "Classic" on it, then it has the claw extractor, and is a controlled round feed.
