Winchester '94, Original Wood? Bert??
I have a 94, .32 Special with saddle ring and what appears to be the original wood.
Serial Number: 925,164
Steel buttplate and the wood underneath are both stamped "92".
I assume they are matched, but had expected the "92" to be the final 2 digits of the serial number, and not the first two.
Is this a co-incidence with mismatched wood and rifle, or was it practice to stamp the first digits of the action into the matching wood and buttplate?

Hello Rob,
The number you found is completely unrelated to the serial numnber. Instead, it is an assembly number to aid in mating up the two pieces again after they were finished. The fellow who built the gun hand-fitted the butt plate to the stock when both were unfinished. After he completed the task of fitting the stock to the receiver frame and the butt plate to the stock, he stamped the "92" on the pieces, then sent the receiver and butt plate over to be blued, and the stock was oil finished. When the parts were finished, they were reassembled based on the assembly number.
On the Model 94, Winchester marked the serial number in just one location... on the bottom of the receiver frame.0 -
