Need Verification Grip size S&W 68

After googling, I'm not sure about the proper grip size on a Smith CHP - 68.

Anyone?
( Hey thanks... if this has under 10 responses by Tuesday, then I can post a photo. My grips are 88 while the revolver is an '82.)

    K frame for sure.
    I THINK it is a square butt.
    But that is obvious to the eye.

    K frame, square butt. L frame Smith of course has the same grip frame and will fit too.

    Nice find - coworker who knows nothing of guns had one given to him, he had no idea what is was. I gave him a set of K frame target stocks from the 70s, perfect fit.

    It is a "K" frame. There are large numbers of grips out there for it. Two styles of S&W - "Magna" and "Target" plus most after-market grip makers build for the type. It's a good solid pistol, enjoy it.

    It's a 38spl. model 66, which is a K frame square butt.

    Right size, wrong version. The M68 grips should have a concave surface at the top edge above the medallion.

    Model 68 is a variant of the model 67 combat masterpiece in .38 special, but with a 6" barrel.

    The quick story is that these guns were built for the California Highway patrol in 1976 in the aftermath of the Newhall massacre.

    In a nutshell, in April 1970 four rookie CHP officers were killed by two criminals in a shootout.

    In investigation afterwards, it was felt that unfamiliarity of the officers with .357 magnum ammo (they were issued 357 ammo but only trained with .38s) was a contributing factor to their poor response. True or not, ultimately the CHP standardized all its officers to .38 special guns.

    Anyway, the gun is built on the medium sized K-frame and has a square butt.

    Its a fairly rare gun; not that many were made.

    The Smith L-frame shares the same grip, but the heavier full-underlug L frame design didn't come out until later.
