Mold on gun stocks
My fathers safe got a little out of control and there are several rifles with mold on the stocks. He has tasked me with cleaning them for him. I've done a search on here but haven't really turned up the answer I'm looking for. I know what is causing it. I want to know the best way to clean and remove the mold from the stocks. There is no rust, but everything will be stripped and well oiled anyway before being returned to him. I'd like to know the best way to clean the stocks preferrably without bleach or vinegar. Thanks in advance guys.

I've never heard of Ballistol. What is it and where can I find it? 0 -
Also be concerned with the safe itself, as the mold spores will probably linger there and were probably there to begin with, causing the problem. Since your safe or its shelves may be lined with carpet, there are probably some commercial preparations to kill mold in carpet or you could wing it with bleach. But, you need to address this as a probable source of the mold
Remove the stocks from the gun and set the gunmetal aside.
Since you do not wish to use Bleach, you could skip the first part of the following recommendation and do the second only.
I would be thinking of using distilled water, Clorox and dishwashing soap in a mixture of:
1 qt water
2 teaspoons bleach
1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
Let the treated wood sit for ten minutes, then wipe down with clear, distilled water and wipe well with clean, dry cloth.
Let dry completely in a warm, dry place for a full day, then,
FOLLOW the bleach/soap treatment with:
A generous application of Ballistol. In fact, if you have a small spray bottle, that might be best, to get the Ballistol in all the nooks and crannies. I would let that sit for a half hour and then wipe down with a clean, dry cloth and reassemble the weapon.
Rub down the entire gun after reassembly with a soft cloth moistened in Ballistol and store.0
