which off the shelf epoxies have you used to fill pitting?
how long has it lasted?
which aerosol paints hold up best to chemicals after curing fully?
i was thinking brake caliper paints were closest to aluma-hyde as an off the shelf paint could get, its got to be chemical & heat resistant, it goes on brake calipers and drums. Also takes a three step baking session, 200f for 30 mins, 350 for 30 mins, then 600 (OR CLOSE TO IT)for 30 mins with complete cooling between each session in the oven.
i did a shotgun awhile back, but sold it before i could test it with cleaners and solvents.

i painted a few indian enfields a few years back with of the self black epoxy paint it did not fill pits but after a week of curing it was tuff stuff 0 -
This is my opinion and others may vary, so here goes.
Very quickly and not at all specifically......If I were you I would be very careful about baking your gun metal at temperatures starting at 500 degrees F. At that temp or slightly lower you begin to get into moving the molecules of the steel around (i.e. messing with the steel's tempering or heat treatment)
You can cause embrittlement in steel anywhere from 500-700 degrees F. What this actually means to you is that you should STOP baking on any coatings at around 300-400 degrees F. I would stop at 300 degrees to be safe unless I knew a whole lot more than I do and had the proper equipment to deal with it.
Personally, I limit raising the temp on my guns to around 200 degrees F and only then to ensure that the water is chased out of the nooks and crannies after a thorough cleaning.
Also, it sounds like you want the coating to act like auto-body filler or Bond-O for your guns. I don't know of any of these coatings that were designed for that purpose.0 -
"then 600 (OR CLOSE TO IT)" I agree with wolf, any temp. over 350/400 deg. and you will change the heat treating (not good). most baking laquers and epoxys have a 'cure' temp of about 300 deg. pits must be filled first. 0
