Hi Gentlemen,

Please excuse me for not being up to date with all there is regarding weapons of this style and history.
I have an old neighbor who has 3 weapons he is interested in trying to find the age etc.This is a daunting task as I know none of the terminology used etc,even though I spent most of my life in the military. So I am trusting you guys,the experts,can help.
I know he has a winchester shotgun 1897 serial 529508 which he said his father pass down to him
There is also a winchester lever action model 92 ?? wcf 25.20 calibre. I have not seen any mention of a 92 any place I have looked

And H&R Plainsman .22 with scope Serial 23481

I dont know if I have found every piece of information needed to research the weapons,I have tried but being a noob it is a maze and have no idea what most of the means.

I am computer literate and have a few digital cameras so could get pics if needed,but you would have to tell me exactly where to look on the weapons
I really appreciate your time on this.

Oh forgot to mention if you need to know,these weapons are located in Canada.

    The serial number of the 92 is on the underside, either under or forward of the lever mechanism. It should be plainly visible. If there isn't a visible serial number it has been removed.

    this is what i have on paper....i could go and get his weapons if needed, but i wrote this down...339424..lol he has a box of shells which cost just over $3.84 cdn as well

    It would be helpful if you can post some pictures of each firearm.

    The Model 1897 was manufactured in June of 1911. The value is determined by several things;

    1. The variation
    2. The graded condition
    3. The gauge (marked on the barrel).

    Based on the serial number, it is a Model 1892, and it was manufactured in May of 1906.

    Again, pictures are needed for us to assist you much further.

    Hi Bert.
    I went over to see the old boy, the 1897 is 12 gauge. he said his father gave it to him and it has not been used much at all as his dad didnt do much hunting back then. If it is off interest to any person because of his age,85 years, he will sell this and the 1892 25.20.
    i shall put some pice up but dont know how good they will be for anyone who needs detail etc....i would say they are both not prestine at all.

    Hello Nigel,

    The Model 1897 shows a lot of use and does not have much original finish left on it. The value is in the $350 - $450 range.

    The Model 1892 has been rebarreled with a mail order replacement barrel, the stocks have been sanded and refinished, and there is very little original finish on the receiver frame. Based pn what I see in the pictutres, it is worth approximately $500.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks so much for your time, I will let the old boy know. He said he would sell them if there was trouble getting his papers re-newed because he left it late and he was fearing they may be taken by the police,and because one of them is over 100 years old he just did not want some one in the dept to get them for free..lol
    He panics a lot when things get a little out of hand with authority.
    I will also tell him that he would be wise looking to sell here because of the trouble exporting etc.

    Ah, forgot to ask. what is the tell tale sign that says to your expert eyes the 1892 has had a replacement barrel...just si i can tell him.

    If cowboy action shooting..SASS.. is active hear you,the cowboys love those model 97's,it's the only pump gun allowed.One of them might also like to have that model 92 for side matches.You can check at www.sassnet.com for info on canadian clubs.

    Hello Nigel,

    The telltail sign was the double proof marks on the top of the barrel. The (P) is the mail order stamp. The superposed "WP" is the definitive Winchester Proof marking.
