Peter Wernig shotgun/rifle combo
An auction house in my area is offering a Peter Wernig shotgun, which might be an "Over & Under", in next week's auction. It might even be a "SxS" but I can't tell from the pics. Their very brief description only says "Peter Wernig double barrel 20 gauge 5.6 x 57" and the only available pictures are below.
I think Wernig was in Austria but that's all I have found out. Does anyone know more about him or his guns? Are they rare, valuable, high or low quality, when was he in business, etc.? I may go check it out next weekend if it's worth my time. Thanks.

Nice looking Piece looks like it was currently made from condition but being a hammer gun it would be in a style popular at the turn of the Twentieth Century. The description leads me to believe It is a Drilling
with 2 Shotgun barrels of 20 Ga. and one rifle that is 5.6 X 57 this cartridge was introduced in 1964. with factory load of 55grain at 3510 fps and 74 grain at 3410 fps.However it may have only one shot barrel and one rifle barrel. The pictures do a good job of hiding the breach face of action or the forearm so we really cant tell . However With this type of fancy checkering I would say $2000.00 Min. value I have a 1988-1989 Eduard Kettner Catalog with some firearms like this but with a different maker.. The scope shows a Quick detach style and this is a very nice set up . I would not be surprised to see it sell well north of $3000.00 the the right buyers are there at this auction Cheers Karl.
EDITHello I will bet lunch to all posters on this subject that this Firearm is made Much later then most people think . I would not be surprised if less then 20 years old and maybe much less the 5.6 X 57 is a great cartridge. Not well know in the U.S. but very well thought of in European countries. The butt stock design is Modern European as well. I bet the shot barrels will also be 76 MM 3 inch. This is a very nice modern gun made in a style of 1900 but the European makers still make some HIGH end Hammer guns.0 -
Your not buying a NAME YOUR BUYING A GUN. The 5.6x57r is a modern cartridge intro around early 60's, near 220 swift cartridge. There is a 5.6x57 but I guess it is the r. The stock design is 60's style. The action is old style or new manufacture along old design. sxs 20ga drilling looks to me. Possibly 20ga 5.6x57 cape gun. High quality scope, rail mount is 70's or newer. horn on wrist area is old. Checked butt no plate.
I am not sure what you have here... definitely a shooter but could be restock/re-line of old drilling. judge the gun on it's own merits, who cares who made it. If you are after a drilling/combo gun to use check it out. My only concern is the 5.6x57, a hot cartridge that runs on high pressure and short barrel life. I am not sure if there is a chip damage on the cheek piece or a design element where it makes the curve. Careful on this one, many old drillings have been relined to smaller rifle with good results depending on the gunsmith but a 5.6x57 is a scary high pressure for that procedure. You sure it is not a 5.6 x something else? Let me know what happens.

Are you sure it's 5.6x57 and not 5.6x52(.22 Sav)? That was, and still is a popular cartridge in drilling and combo guns over there. 0 -
Trapp55, I am with you on that thinking. The 5.6x57 although popular was introduced at a time unlikely to selected for reline or re-make of a classic back action hammer drilling. If indeed a 52r fear not I have extensive reloading,( firing .224 vs .227) components, and such for this fine cartridge. Other bidders will shy away from a 52r, you will get it at a nice price.Price some where between 2k and 3.5k, I would not buy for resale but only as a shooter for yourself.
Under the foreend right on the rifle barrel it should say 52 or 57, my bet is it will say 7.9x57 or 9.3x72r. Whatever let us know, interesting, thanks for pics.
Edit update. No bet Perry you could be right on . Not only that I can not see those barrels in the case and it looks like another set in there.
Could be a 5.6x57r double and a double 20 or even a cape. All bets are off on value then!0 -

I "copied and pasted" the ad exactly as they showed it on their website so that's all the information I have. I guess I'll take a ride out there next Friday and have a closer look.0 -
