This is a gun I listed for a customer who thinks it is a gold mine.. if it doesnt move Ill get him to lower his expectations.. Seems like we have a mixed idea of what this is ? So what do I have here ? You need the serial number ? What do you need to know to tell me what exactly this is ?

    If its a .38 SPECIAL then its a Police Positive "Special" not a Police Positive. Starting price IMNSHO should be aboout $250 to $300. The square butt was discontinued in the mid 30's so this appears to be a second issue PPS made from 1928-46.

    What you have is a Police Positive Special in .38 Special Caliber. These revolvers were prone to develop timing problems. Slowly cock the hammer and see if the cyl rotates into battery. Then slowly lower the hammer to see if the cyl rotates into battery before the hammer is down. I suspect this problem as the gun may have had lots of use. If the timing is not off I would mention it in the listing. With the finish wear and pd markings I would think you have a $250 revolver to someone who wants a shooter. With the complete serial number and model number someone can tell you when the revolver was made which would determine C & R status.

    I have a Police Positive Special in .32/20 and the timing is terrible. Not a shooter. Yours would bring around $225 to $275 down here in TN. They were common local LEO guns of yesteryear.

    Check the completed auctions in advanced search for this model. With the condition of the blueing, the scratched initials and worn grips....I have serious doubts it'll bring more than $250.00. BTW, there was a question in the prior thread about the serial number. When I look at your pic, enlarged, it still looks like the first number is an 8. If so, this is not C&R eligible (1964) and I might consider this has been rebarreled. If the first number is a 3, then it would be the correct patent date barrel.

    Hi MFI,

    There is a market for old NICE Colts. However, there are some things lacking on that one. Number one is it is only an 80% gun. Number two, it is inscribed on the side "NHPD", and it is not stamped. Any department that would have put their markings on these, would have surely stamped it on there. And lastly, it is unknown if it is even a good shooter. You are looking at $300.00 maximum, in a good economy. Yes, Colts are collectable, just not all of them.

    All this adds up, or down, in this case. If there is a discrepancy between your customer's and your idea's, I would not list it any more, and let him list it on his own. It is your reputation, and ratings at stake, not his. This is not what your customer has in his head that it is. I have had people like that also, who keep saying, "but it is old"...well yes it is. But it looks like a well used old gun, not a new, hardly used, old gun.

    The serial number is 358***.. The timing , lockup etc seems to be excellent on this ..I talked to him and its been lowered to $350.00 .. Ive been doing this for 20+ years but there is still plenty I do not have a wealth of knowledge on.Especially Colt's and older genre stuff. Im not one of those "know it all gun dealers" LOL.. Thanks guys ..

    Once it [after owner realizes gun isn't selling] is removed from the GB listings, will you have to pay any type of listing fee? If so, best you iron that aspect out with the owner.

    No listing fees here unless you SELL the item . That is why you see some stuff on here for the last hundred years or others testing the market here. I have it under control ..
