changing residency (MA. LTC-A to NJ)
Hi all,
I am a mass resident and i have a mass LTC A.. ill be moving to New Jersey and was wondering if when i change residency to New Jersey will it make my mass ltc invalid because it is not a non-resident ltc or will it be good until the time of expiration? thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, NJ does not honor a Maine LTC. Once you move your place of residence OUT of Maine, your resident permit stops- when you become a resident elsewhere. 0 -
MA stands for Massachusetts, not Maine.
You will be lucky if you are able to keep your guns in NJ. NJ does not recognize a MA carry permit, probably because MA does not recognize a NJ carry permit. And, NJ only gives permits to retired NJ LEO's, retired feds, & well-connected people.

EDIT: NJ, like most other states, requires that you get their drivers license when you establish residency. When you get a NJ DL, you will have to surrender your MA DL to the NJ motor vehicle administration. Lots of luck claiming residency in one state when your DL shows you are a resident of another.0 -
Short answer is yes, it will become invalid.
I had a MA LTC for many years - the "A" and "B" didn't exist, back then it was "Target & Hunting" or "All Legal Purposes" and that was the equivilent of self defense. Not sure what the "A" is now.
Your MA LTC is issued to you as a resident LTC, when you are no longer a resident of the Commonwealth the LTC is no longer valid. If you leave MA for NJ forever and establish residency there the answer is pretty easy - the MA LTC is no longer valid.
If you contemplate retaining your MA DL and MA LTC to afford yourself the ability to carry in MA during visits, as a practical matter, if you have casual contact with the police and they check - it will probably come back fine. But if you ever have to use a gun and the veracity of the LTC delved into, the veneer of your "residency" will most likely be removed.
While your MA LTC is in effect, why not apply for a MA non-resident LTC?0 -
I pretty much wasted just $100 on the mass ltc which i just got lol... i figured it would be no good.. oh well.. i wonder how long ill be able to keep my mass residency. hopefully for the duration of my license. i hate wasting money 0 -

Congratulations. You're moving from the second most gun-unfriendly state in the Northeast to the most unfriendly one. (Plus "Taxachussets" has nothing on NJ when it comes to taxes. . .expect your tax bill to go up).
Editorializing aside, I think the right answer has been given, namely that the LTC is valid for MA residents, not for non-residents.
Once you no longer reside there, if you want to carry in MA, you'll need to apply for a non-resident LTC. You're also supposed to notify the licensing agency in MA *in writing* that you're leaving the State when you do, so they can account for your registered guns.
Believe it or not, the NON-resident LTCs are generally easier to obtain than the resident ones, because the former are administered by the State, and with the latter, local law enforcement has veto power.
As mentioned, it may not be legal for you to even bring your guns into NJ without an NJ firearms ID card (which can take months to get), so be careful.
Its also virtually impossible to get a concealed carry permit in NJ. Yes, on paper they exist, but NJ is a "may issue" state meaning that to get a permit you need some judge or chief law enforcement officer to sign off on it. In practice, unless you need a gun for your job or you're politically connected its probably not going to happen.

J, You can go to the NJ State Police site and click on the related links to read their gun laws. It will have a list of specific & general characteristics of prohibited weapons that you will not be allowed to bring with you. Be careful, as although a Ruger 10/22 is legal, a mag that holds more than 15 rnds is not only illegal in itself, but it turns the 10/22 into a banned weapon. Even a .22 semi-auto with a tube that holds more than 15 rnds is a banned assault weapon. There is a gray area in that you should be able to transport your legal weapons to your new home without a NJ Firearms Purchaser ID Card, but people have been arrested for just that. Once in NJ, you don't have to register the legal weapons you bring there. Registration is voluntary for dummies. NJ law is confusing in that it says that you can't do or have something, then gives many reasons why you can... Hollow point ammo is a prime example. First it says that it is illegal & then it tells you when you can have it. Lastly, you will not get a carry permit & NJ will not honor any other states. All this is why I'm moving out of NJ.
