Long Unertl scopes, continued
The old, long scopes like the Fecker, Unertl, and Listshert were the best optics of their day. Prior to this era the Winchester A5 had this same distinction for quite some time.
The Winchester A5 was not the first of the shorter type scopes in the history of scope making. During the War Between the States, the scopes used by snipers of the CSA, were very short in comparison to the A5. However, from the days of William Malcom scopes back in the 1850s up to WWII, long scopes were the norm.
Prior to WWII, a man by the name of William Weaver in Kentucky began making scopes, and shortly thereafter he moved his operations to El Paso, Texas, and his scope making innovations helped turn the corner from long scopes with external adjustments to short ones with internal adjustments.
