Another Winchester Model 62/62A question

Did these come with a varnished stock originally or did the finish vary from year to year. I recently acquired my first Model 62A and the stock and slide looks like it was originally an oil type finish or the original finish has been removed. After I bought my 62A I wiped the wood down with alcohol which removed a lot of the darkness. There is a model 62 in a local gun shop that has a "refinished look" to the wood but the wood doesn't look heavily sanded and the metal to wood fit is good. Is it better to refinish these or just leave them alone?

    Of course the standard advice to leave them alone stands, but if you are sure the stock has already been post-production varnished, then returning that wood to factory finish would be a good idea. There are many Winnie fans here who will comment as to the originality and period correctness of the finish; wait til they chime in befor proceding at all. Sounds like a nice find anyway!

    The model 62A will be found with both the varnished and oil finished wood. Dark oil finished wood is generally a sign that it has been used very little. With considerable handling, oil finished wood will become smooth and shiny, particularly at the grip and the forearm.

    Added: Many of the older model 62's might give the appearance of having being sanded due to a lighter colored wood and considerably more varnish having been applied to the wood than most received.
