Winchester 1894 #3149

For your interest attached are some photos of a Winchester 1894 which I acquired back in 1963 from a Catholic Mission on James Bay. Note the low serial number and the obvious signs of hard use in a harsh climate. For many years I assumed from information in the Madis Winchester Book that this gun was manufactured in late 1894. Is this still correct assumption? It does have the early model screw above the loading gate. The scratch in the receiver was made by me (OOPS!)when I took the gun apart, with improper tool, for cleaning some 48 years ago. The gun is still a very accurate shooter and I have hunted deer, moose and bear and even a seal once with it over these many years. Any idea on value?

    I assume it's .38-55 caliber. According to Bert's records, it was made in the spring of 1895.

    Indeed a .38-55! I don't know when the mission acquired the gun but it was probably early on since the condition is typical of guns from the James Bay area. Possibly bought from the Hudson's Bay Company which had operated a store nearby since about 1680.

    According to the historical records, it was serialized in February of 1895. It will most likely letter as being received in the warehouse in March/April of 1895.

    Bert, Many thanks again for that. Do you know how many were made with the screw above the loading gate. I understand it is referred to as the First Model. Can you give me an appoximate value although I have owned it for so long I probably would never sell it?
