Good Inexspensive single stack 9mm?
I have some friends that run cattle way out in the middle of nowhere. My friend carries a 9mm but it is to big for his wifes hand and they both want her to have a gin for this situation as well as for her concealed carry gun.
They would like a smaller single stack 9mm but need to stay in the $350.00- $450.00 range. I am having a hard time coming up with a midsize single stack 9mm in that price range that is a good one.
Whatever they get she will check out well first but I need to come up with a short list to check out for them. Most that I can think of are either no longer made or a lot more money or both. The stipulations are below. Thanks for your help with suggestions.

Wow, that user name sounds like it couldn't be much fun...hehehehe
I would suggest that you look at the Kahr PM-9 for starter's. Then I would traverse from there to the Para-USA LDA series. The LDA series is a double action type of 1911. I believe it can be had in an officers size 9mm...but I would look seriously at the 45...in both makes.

I will agree with you MOSSBERG. Those are awesome shooter's. I sold a lot of them New 15 years ago for $495.00 out the door. Have you seen the price tag on USED ones on the auction side today? When I say used, I mean they look USED. They are selling for $600.00 and up!0 -

I think the single stack requirement may limit her.
Check out the Police Trade in Sig P6 / P225 9mm's.
Getting harder to find but may be available in your price range.

Might take her to a pistol range that rents firearms and have her try out a few different styles.
You'd be suprised what women shoot best with.

There are actually MANY excellent single-stack 9mm luger guns out there to pick from, including well-established European designs. The problem is that the best of them fall outside the price range.
Walther P38/P1 would be the "classic" and if you can tolerate the "Nazi" look, they are available in your price range.
Walther P5 is even better, but you're outside the price range. Ditto for Heckler and Koch P7. Sig P210 is the ULTIMATE single-stack gun (period), but at $2800, I wouldn't use one for concealed carry!
Surplus SIG P225s are still available for under $450, and that probably about as good as you're going to get in a single stack 9mm. Not small, but good ergonomics and great shooters. Check them out.
Kel-Tec PF9 is a <$300 single stack 9mm, and its fairly light and small. But this is NOT a "medium frame" gun and recoil can be pretty harsh. Its also not easy to rack the slide, and both these things might be "deal breakers" for concealed carry by a woman.
Taurus has a "slim" model 9mm that's more or less similar. Walther PPS is awesome. . .but is going to exceed the price specs, plus teensy polymer 9mm will potentially have same recoil issues. Ditto for smallest Kahr.
The compact (not sub-compact) Kahr, particularly the all steel one, could be a good choice, again, but for price.
A 1911 in 9mm is a great choice for a single-stack 9mm, offering good ergonomics and customizable (ie pink grips!). Problem here is that you're probably not going to find a decent one for only $350 (let alone a new one, or a compact/alloy frame new one!).
Smith 3913 is awesome, but as mentioned the "Ladysmith" ones are running about $600 now. There are later production models that are similar (all steel or alloy frame. . .sorry but I forget the model numbers) that run a bit less. None of these are in current production anymore, though there are still a lot of them floating around on the used market.
You definitely CAN find a good Smith model 39 (or variant) for under $450, and with its alloy frame that would be an excellent choice for a single-stack medium concealed carry gun.0 -
Ruger also came out with a near-LCP sized 9mm, this might be worth looking into as well.
As the prior post says, the best thing is to try out a batch of guns first, THEN buy what they like best. Nuthin' worse than plunking down a bunch of money for a gun you are told is the cat's meow by friends or internet posts then when you actually shoot it/carry it you hate it.0 -
How about a Star BM? It is a modified 1911 style that is officer size, 8 plus 1 capacity. All steel construction that is a little heavy but that helps with the recoil. The BM fits small hands nicely. A nice BM with two magazines is priced within the range mentioned. People that have them love them, just search the internet. Cons about the BM are Star is no longer in business and the BMs were on the surplus market several years ago. Magazines are hard to find, but not that hard I have picked up seven or eight in the last several years. The same goes with parts but they are available and the internet can help with this. My BM was purchased used and had holster wear on the bluing and the plastic grips are scratched in a few places. I have shot several thousands of rounds out of this auto and only had one case that stuck in the chamber but that was after many hundred of rounds shot without cleaning. It is one of the guns that I own that I will not sell. 0 -

Makarovs are dogeddly reliable and can be had under $400 NIB...used takes an easy $150 off that I have and East German made thati would stake my life on...it's also the only auto I own that the little lady can shoot. The 9x18 falls a little short of the 9mm luger, but the other requirements you mention are mostly filled by one. Paid $150 for mine about a decade back.
I also like your idea of a little Smith...perhaps a 442 or 642? VERY light, small for small hands and rated 38+P at around $400 to $425 NIB. Dad has several of them and really likes it for all the obvious reasons...well designed/built, alloy frame, steel guts and 38+P is as bad as anything out there to get hit by from around 15 feet (average "varmint" engagement range![;)]). Great trigger for a short and nasty revolver...never had a Smith that didn't have that good a trigger!0 -
