Rem 700 SPS Varmint .308 vs. Factory Ammo

I just bought a Rem 700 SPS Varmint in .308 and was wondering if I could get some insight on some factory ammo. I don't handload (yet) but was just wondering how tight of a group I could expect when it comes to hunting rounds. I am unable to take it to the range yet as I am currently overseas.

    You can expect .5 MOA-1 MOA accuracy. That is, if you shoot that well and have glass on it to match the capability of the rifle. If you do shoot those are very good for accuracy. The stocks still need a little ergonomics but still very shootable.

    Thanks for the advice. I think I am going with either a Nikon
    Monarch 3x9x40 or a Swift 3x9x40 as I am not going to be shooting out past 300 yards and that's pushing it. I was just wondering on factory ammo I haven't caught any factory ammo brands on the reviews I have read so far which leads me to believe they were using handloads.

    about the two best brands you can get for that caliber are Black Hills and Federal Match. Hunting ammo isn't going to be as accurate but it will still be decent. If and when you get into handloading you will see the difference in short order.

    I agree on the Black Hills - excellent ammo for those who don't reload. Regarding scopes, my experience with Swift (and Mueller too) is that they are OK but have fairly short eye relief. The 308 isn't exactly a kicker, but on one of my 308s there was just enough recoil and the eye relief short enough that the Swift kept tapping my shooting glasses a bit. Not enough to hurt, just enough to annoy.

    While testing ammunition for SWAT marksmen we found that the Federal Gold Medal Match with the 168 grain Sierra boat tail hollow point was outstanding. The Balck Hills was also very good. The one that surprised us was the Hornady 155 grain TAP polymer tip. It shot nearly as tightly as the Federal and to the same point of aim/impact out to 250 meters.

    It all depends on what you mean for hunting. The match ammo, mostly is non-expanding, and should not be used for hunting big game. I would try the Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips, and the Federal Premium loaded with the Barnes TSX bullets. Both in weights of 150 grains. They should shoot well under 1 MOA in your rifle.

    I would forget the Swift, and Nikon, and go with a Burris Signature Series in the same price range. A lot more scope for the same money.

    As far as median ranged glass goes, I have become rather fond of the Vortex scopes. Started seeing them last year and recently they have become much more common where I work. I see everything imaginable there from US Optics to Swarovski to Zeiss Hensoldt and plenty of Simmons, and Meuller and Bushnell as well and the Vortex stuff has to be considered near the head of the pack for the mid range stuff. Most of what I have seen is the high end Razor HD tactical series, but I am seeing more Viper and they look really nice for the money too. Burris Signature is nice for the money as well, just not seeing that many new ones of late...? Experienced an issue with one of their scopes (a client actually) last year and it took a few more calls than it might/should have to get things straightened out, but in the end they made good on their guarantee. All told, to get the best bang for your investment dollar, you should be spending around 1K on glass, give or take.

    First focal plane, good power range (including 10x setting for ease of mil-dot usage)around the price I mentioned...just check it out and see what you think.
    As far as factory ammo goes, I've seen those things shoot Remington green box like a house on fire, and put Combined Technologies all over the place and vice versa. All comes down to what the particular rifle likes and with any luck thats something cheap you can use to break it in and punch paper. As a start place for the best out of the box, the Federal Gold medal match and Black Hills Match are both good suggestions; still say each rifle is defined by it's own set of rules ammo-wise.
