Colt 1851 Navy opinions sought.-pic heavy
This is a Colt 1851 Navy (4th Model I believe) that I picked up. It looks to me like original finish, due to the very clear cylinder scene and most of the other markings, but this has turned to a nice plum color which I haven't seen on many Colts. In your opinions, is this original finish ? All numbers match. Any ballpark guesses on value ? I got it in a group of 8 Colt Revolvers all of Civil War vintage.

Yep, 4th model with large trigger guard. It's a nice looking Colt (the '51 Navy is my favorite) but I have to believe it's been cleaned, probably with naval jelly. I've owned a lot of them and when they fade, it's usually to a bluish or gray mottled finish, particularly where the case hardening was. I don't see any case colors on the frame, hammer or loading lever or any silver residue on the trigger guard/backstrap. Just my humble opinion, of course.

I would bet 99% that it is a refinished albeit very nice pistol [^][^][:D]. The main thing I don't like is the 4 notches on the grips look like they were done Yesterday[V][:(] 0 -

The notches don't look new in person. They appear to have been done a while ago. Sometimes pics just don't do proper justice.
A couple of them are going to make it to the auction side.
Here is the batch. It consisted of 2 Colt Conversions, pocket Navy, 1851 Navy, 1861 Navy, 1862 Police and 2 1849 pockets.0 -
It's been polished out. Look at edges between frame and trigger guard, barrel and backstrap. They should be sharp.
Also screw holes look dished out.
Plum antiquing doesn't compute it's a nice piece but not my idea of a collectible.0
