AK 47 Vs AK 74
Other than the caliber, what is the MAJOR difference betweek the AK 47 and AK 74? The actual operating mechanism and overall design appear to be almost identical. I have an AK 47 but I'm contemplating purchasing an AK 74. Is it worth it or are the differences so minimal that it wouldn't justify the expense? Thanks!

I recently sold my Romanian WASR AK 7.62x39 because I just can't live with 6" to 12" groups at 100 yards. I have a battery of other rifles that perform the way I want but I've still got a hankering for an AK in my gun safe. Can I expect better accuracy from one of the AK 74 variants in 5.45 x39 or should I expect just more of the same abysmal accuracy?

What you probably have is technically an AKM, not an "AK-47", but this is semantics.
Between the AKM and AK-74 there are a few minor differences in terms of the stock and (if I remember right) a few small parts, but the caliber is really the only big difference.
Whether or not its "worth it" depends on what you're trying to accomplish, but the 5.45x39 round is ballistically similar to the 5.56x45 NATO round.
There is still a good amount of cheap surplus in the 5.45 out there, so that might be one reason to buy one.

If you were just after the "look", you could put an AK-74 style furniture or muzzle-brake on an AKM. That's not a big deal.
5.45x39 round is generally considered to be more accurate than 7.62x39, but this is probably in good part due to ammo quality. . .the typical steel case 7.62x39 isn't great in that respect. Lower recoil of 5.45x39 and flatter trajectory probably help here somewhat as well.
Regardless, if you're after maximum accuracy, you're probably better off starting with a more intrinsically accurate platform than a Kalashnikov.0
