how rare is a 1920's carbine without a ovetail for a rear sight? gun has a lyman 21 sight on it. barrel has winchester markings like a normal barrel.

We would need to see very clear and detailed pictures of it, to make any determinations. If it is a special order, it can be very rare. Have you researched it with the Cody Firearms Museum, to see if it paper's correctly?

A 1920s vintage Model 94 can not be researched other than the Polishing Room serialization date.
That said, I am quite sertain that the gun is correct. A barrel mounted rear sight would at a minimum partially obscure the sight picture when using a Lyman No. 21 receiver peep sight. The logical solution would be to omit the rear sight dovetail slot (or to put a filler in it). Most are found with the dovetail filler.0 -
this gun must of been ordered this way, the rear dovetail was never cut. 0 -

Carbines are extremely common. Carbines with a factory installed Lyman No. 21 sight and no rear sight dovetail are very uncommon.0
