which mausers had heat treatment issues?
i have an 1891 argentine mauser made in loewe berlin i was going to trade it today for a mossberg 500 12ga, when the person interested in trading looked it over he stopped at the serial number and said "oh, its a C model"
I was like WTH? its a BERLIN built rifle (C744* serial) not a spain Oviedo or argentina or mexico arsenaled "c" serialed rifle etc..... Berlin used the proper heat treating from what i have read and understood.
Spain and south american mausers had the heat teatment & constant headspacing issues i thought?
i was going to modify this semi sported rifle into a .223 but changed my mind as its a really nice looking and well kept rifle. so i couldnt bring myself to alter it any further.
this one is a stock 7.65 argentine with only the barrel cut and the stock shortened (nicely).

Sounds like he got cold feet to me. That business about the serial number is BS. Buyer remorse kicked in early, unfortunately for you. A sporterized 91 Argentine isn't exactly a hot item, either money wise or as a shooter. It probably dawned on him he was going to get the short end of the deal, and would be much better off keeping the Mossberg. 0 -
either way, it just struck me odd that he said it was a c model and the heat treating of these mausers was bad bases soley on the serial alone.
I thought that was only the mausers made outside of germany as i have been reading in all the websites and forums on the net..

PO Ackley published a reloaders manual in the early 60's. In the begenning he talks about the various Mauser actions and their relative strength. It must be republished somewhere or available online. 0 -

The only differences are the the ATF status. Ludwig Loewe built and stamped rifles are classified as "Antique", pre 1899, and DWM built and stamped rifles are "C&R".
The "C" prefix dates yours to 1893.0
