Colt Police Positive

The local pawn shop has recently added 4 Colt Police Positive revolvers to their display case. All show a patent date of July 4, 1905. One in particular is chambered 38 S&W, with a 6" bbl., s/n 866xx. This gun is parkerized. Could that be original? And if so is it rare and how would it effect value. The finish is 95% plus.

    I have a Colt Police Positive .32 Police CTG. with last patent date of October 5, 1926. Serial #339756.

    Can you help with age of gun and what type of cartridge can be safely used in this gun. I have never fired it, and it has been in my gun safe for 20 years.

    Sometimes aftermarket stocks are fitted that obscure the serial number. Remove the stocks to see if their is any visible serial number on the grip.

    If your Colt revolver is in .38 Special Caliber then it is a Police Positive Special. The Police Positive came in .38 S & W caliber, not .38 Special. This might help narrow the search for a date of manufacture. I have a Colt Police positive that has no number on the butt. The serial number is on the inside of the front of the frame. The cyl must be opened to read it. Is that where you found the number 1540?

    I found the number on the butt of the gun. I'll check the front of the frame and, if necessary, remove the grips.

    If that is the factory applied serial number on the butt, it appears to be a very early production piece.

    It would be best if you could post quality photos of the Colt, specially the area of the butt with the serial number.

    Hi: I just wanted to let you all know, I found the serial no. on the inside front of the frame. I called Colt's customer service no. and they verified the year of manufacture as 1934. I was very surprised. When I purchased the gun, I thought it was probably made in the 50's or 60's. Thanks to all who responded to my request.
