M1 Garand Help
I'm thinking about buying a MI Grand through the CMP program. I'm wondering how good of shape these rifles really are. I was thinking about buying a rack grade springfield or even a Danish with the VAR Barrel in the Winchester. So I'm just wondering what peoples past experiences are from buying from The CMP Program. Is it worth driving there and picking out your own or just order by the phone and get what they give ya. Any input in this will be greatly appreiciated. [url][/url]Email is rjb@30below.com

I want to buy a m1 garand to target shoot. I dont want to spend alot on it and know nothing about them. I did inherit 80, yes 80 cans of ammo for it. Its 3006 ammo. I want something that I have to fix up a little. I want to spend under 800 for it. What do I look for and is there a certian model??? Thanks for any help. Oakie. 0 -
No point in getting into parts. Both rifles have been rebuilt multiple times, so most parts are replacement &/or been refinished.
Blue Sky was an importer that bought many of the most abused rifles that we sold to the Korean Army. I suspect that you will also find an import marking on #2, but it probably doesn't matter.
If the bores are good, either rifle might would make an adequate "shooter", but neither is a "collector".

EDIT: Top price for Blue Sky M1's is in the $500 range; if the barrel is shot out, maybe $300. The "poor man's muzzle wear gauge" that Lefty describes should be a single round of USGI M2 ball; when inserted in the muzzle, measure how much copper jacket shows. 5/16"=new, 1/4"=excellent, 1/8"= good, 0"=replace, <0=shot out.0 -
the second rifle does not have import marks as far as i can see, and do you have any clue to the value? i disassembled them and the parts are stamped SA 0 -
agree with what neal said.
i haven't looked at your pics yet, so no comment on value
the korean rifles were ridden hard and put away wet. the korean armorers frequently did the rube goldberg thing to keep the guns running.
blue sky replaced a lot of parts with usgi parts, the guns still have the stigma of being shot to hell korean guns.
a lot of folks equate SA parts with quality, so i'm guessing your guns will have similar value to CMP field issue.

The first gun has been refinished for sure and possibly the second. The stocks are obviously beat up. You might put a .30 cal live round in the muzzle and see how far it goes in the barrel. If it goes in all the way to the case, the barrel is shot out. They both look like "shooters" only. 0 -
Take heart that all M1 Garands were built for combat and all have been reconditioned to some extent. The SA does indicate Springfield Armory but as others have stated some were rebuilt better than others.
Good news is they were all built to last and like a good old car with the right handling they have to good metal to last forever.0 -
