#57 Shotgun primers

A friend asked me about #57 shotgun primers, they look similar to 209 primers...are they interchangeable? Would they work in a muzzleloader with 209 ignition? I don't know...any help would be greatly appreciated, as he claims to have a carton of 1000 or so...Thanks-Craig

  note, they are smaller dia. than std. 209's, remington use these up untill about 1970. I'f you don't have cases that old they are useless.

  would depend on the muzzleloader, any with a closed breech to hold the primer in should work..

  the 57 is .232 just below the rim and 209 is .244 just below the rim.
  Even in a closed breech you stand the chance of gas leakage around the primer
