Winchester 16 gauge shells
Has anyone had shotgun shells swell and push the ends out of them, almost to the point of letting the pellets pour out. These are a box of Whinchester 16 gauge and about half of them are doing it. The diamater is not swelled just the ends pushing out. I have other Federal's that are 5 times as old and they are fine, both boxes setting side by side. Thanks

No it is not moisture, never out of house since I bought them. Unless they got wet setting in the gun shop where I bought them. 0 -

Sounds like someone's reloads to me. The star crimp often opens up on reloads if poorly crimped or if the hull is getting near the max limit or reloads. 0 -
These were not reloads, came from and avery relibable dealer, if he sold reloads for new shells he would be run out of town. 0 -
There should be a LOT number on one of the box end flaps....call Winchester with it. 0 -
I've seen this happen, in many cases, with OLD - say 1950s - 1960s era shotgun shells of any gauge. Working in a gunshop for a couple years - many were brought in by customers, etc. - I'm thinking it is due to moisture pick up by wadding and as previously noted - oxidation on the lead pellets. Most of the ones I saw/see, in original boxes, show the cardboard to have moisture caused effects/degradation also. I don't shoot any of them in this condition - don't know if their dangerous - just don't like the idea of putting them in my guns. 0
