mosin nagant rifles

what is the difference from the hex head and round receivers? is one better or stronger? does it really matter? I want a shooter, not collectable. Thanks!

    As a shooter, it doesn't really matter.

    The hex ones may in theory be slightly stronger but in practice both are more than strong enough for the 7.62X54R.

    While you say you primarily want a shooter, if you get a hex, you can have both a shooter AND a more collectible rifle (slightly) for just a small premium in price. I also find the fit and finish of the hex receivers to be better- most were made pre-war.

    I was told that the hex indicated that the gun was an older model than the round.

    aaron17.....welcome to the GB Forum and ATE. The hex (actually polygonal) was the original 1891 designed Mosin. In 1930 the Mosin was upgraded and the receiver was made round to save production time and money, however some 91/30's were made with hex receivers until the supply of old parts was exhausted...about 1936 or so. Neither is better or stonger than the other. I have several of both and they all shoot about the same. Hope this helps[^]

    In terms of strength, there is no practical difference; the round receiver guns are PLENTY strong.

    In theory the hex receivers were mostly made pre WWII when production wasn't as forced, so the craftsmanship on those guns may be better.

    In practice, its going to depend on where and when they were made, and of course on the condition of the individual gun you're talking about.

    If you just want a "blaster", either gun will do fine.
