Iver Johnson 22cal Model 57A
Can anyone tell me if this revolver is a double action only or is it supposed to also be a single action. I recently bought one at a gun show and was wondering since the hammer does not cock and stay cocked. HELP

Sorry, but yor I.J. 57 is a single action and a double action . Your sear to hammer conection is worn out. Or the spring operating the sear is broken or missing. IT should work both ways. 0 -

Often these springs are simple flat springs that can be purchased cheaply in stock form. The trick is that once you've figured out how to disassemble/reassemble the gun to get at it. You then have to experiment cutting and/or bending your spring stock piece to correct configuration. A very time/labor intensive trial & error process that few gunsmiths are willing to undertake. Because at "shop hourly rate", it could easily cost more than the gun is worth to finally get it right.
I had the good fortune as a young man to have an elderly friend that was an ace at this stuff. He was a retired career Army guy who's job at some point in the Army was working on/fixing guns. He had the time and he liked doing it. I would buy old broken guns and he would "help" me fix them. Admittedly HE did most of it. But I got see how it was done. I don't know if he's still alive. So lacking his experience, or someone like him. I would say your best bet is to attempt to do it yourself. 1st step would be find an assembly/disassembly guide. The NRA published some good ones (covering many guns in same book) in past years. And there are some modern publications. Try to find one that covers you pistol.
Then after finding out what size, buy some spring stock. Best to buy several pieces. Then get to experimenting. Good luck.0
