Advantages of a picatinny rail

I have Browning A-bolt 270wsm with a Leupold 3-9X40 scope. What are the advantages of mounting my scope using picatinny rails?

    On that type of rifle all it will do is give you a little more adjustment as to where your rings are placed. I've heard folks claim that a one piece ring mount will also give better accuracy by making the reciever more rigid... I think that's reachin'a bit.

    So by using Picatinny rails, one of the advantages is that it may help a bit with eye relief because I could now move my scope back a little more? Are there any other advantages? Thanks

    You can also mount MORE things in front of the scope like an illuminator, or levels, or whatever strikes your fancy. I also agree that while a properly installed piccatinney will strengthen the reciever rigidity-wise, I think it might be a little overstated to say it is a significant improvement. In my opinion the Piccatinney rails are a bit deeper cut, and they are a consistant spacing. Often times as well the weaver cross bars are too small; you can use weaver on a piccatinney but not always vice versa. In my recent experience, I have come to appreciate the Piccatinnies as they give you so much more flexability in terms of mounting options.

    Picatinny, as opposed to what?

    If you're talking about a Picatinny vs an otherwise similar Weaver mount, there is a VERY small difference in the spec dimension between the slot diameter of the two that could mean a better/worse fit with certain rings. A smaller ring set in a larger slot theoretically has more room for back-forth "slop" under recoil, potentially decreasing accuracy.

    If you mean a continuous Picatinny rail vs a two piece type mount, there are potentially several advantages to the Picatinny, though none may realistically apply to you:

    -More places to put your mounts potentially makes it easier to swap in or out different kinds of optics.

    -More rail "real estate" is potentially useful if you wanted to "daisy chain" more than one optic in a row (EG a magnifier in front of a dot sight, or a night vision device in front of your scope, etc).

    -More flexibility for increasing/decreasing eye relief.

    On accuracy, I don't think a once piece scope mount or base will do all that much in increasing the functional stiffness of your receiver, which is probably already made of massive hardened steel.

    I think the point is to increase accuracy by decreasing movement/vibration of the rings in relation to one another. In other words, its supposed to increase functional stiffness of the SCOPE. Whether or not that really adds anything either is also debatable.

    The Picatinny rail system has been accepted since 1995 and is the system currently in use by many countries.

    The general advantages are standardization, flexibility and interchangeability of optics and accessories. Technically, accessories from one weapons kit can be used with minimum changes on another weapon kit. The dimensions and tolerances are standardized.

    However, NATO has taken up the search for an improved system, recently named NAR or NATO Accessory Rail. The differences will be better tolerances and the location surfaces will the flat on the top of the rail instead of the angles on the sides of the rail.

    In your situation, the advantages are as named with eye relief being the most noteworthy in general. This comes into play when your particular scope has a minimum amount of room to place the rings in relationship to the base and your eye.

    As has been stated, flexibility is the main advantage. It can allow you to better adjust your eye relief on a standard rifle scope. It can also allow you to use a wide rang of other sighting systems, such as, but not limited to, red dots, holographic sites, and magnifyers, night vision, anti-cant level's, uphill, and down hill angle indicators, etc,...there might even be a "kitchen sink" accessory attachment.

    Standardization was also another intended main objective of this system.

    it would be helpful to mount a level or cosign indicator.

    It would be helpful to mount a scope just like you want it considering its configuration.

    It will quickly allow to switch optic platforms assumeing you have proper rings/mounts.
