Colt SAA 2nd gen numbers

I was looking at mid 2nd gen today and the cylinder number matched the last 3 numbers of serial number. The loading gate number did not match. Did not pull grip. Did Colt ever use serial number on cylinder? Replaced cylinder? Or any other explanation? How would this effect value? Thanks.

    I'm not knowledgeable with respect to 2nd Generation Single Actions, but Colt used the partial serial number on cylinders and barrels during various periods of production. I'd say if the number on your cylinder matches the last three digits of the serial number, it is original to the gun. The number on the loading gate is an assembly number and only rarely will it match the last digits of the serial number. If 2nd Generation guns are like 1st Generation guns the same assembly number should be stamped on the frame somewhere; perhaps on the rear of the frame hidden by the grips like it was on all post 1908 Single Actions.

    More loading gates DO NOT match then those that do . on first generation guns the early ones had the number of the loading gate on the frame but it was stamped on a place that was covered when trigger guard was installed. not the total serial number that was on trigger guard frame and back-strap. Likewise Some second Gen guns may have numbers on the cylinder and others don't.

    I thought, on 2nd gen, the gate number and cylinder number should match, and neither would match the serial number. So sometimes you will find the serial number's last three digits on cylinder? Thanks.

Thanks.I don't have any books on 2nd Generation Single Actions, only 1st Generation Single Actions, but I did a little research on line and found a reference that stated about an early 2nd Generation gun; the cylinder, loading gate, and rear frame flat are properly matched by assembly number. So, perhaps the cylinder was marked with an assembly number, not a partial serial number like 1st Generation guns. Hopefully someone will have a Wilkerson book to confirm this.
