Marlin Model # location

i have a marlin which was given to me several years ago but now i would like find out alittle about it. it has a octagon barrel which has 1889 stamped on it and marlin firearms. that cant be the model can any one tell me where the model# is. also its alittle rusty can this be safely taken off

  That is the model of the rifle.
  Go to the auction side and put 1889 Marlin in the search box and see if your rifle looks like any there.
