reproduction 1864 U.S. Navy Springfield
I recently purchased a reproduction 1864 U. S. Navy Springfield 58 cal. black powder rifle. It has Japan 340 stamped on it... I am looking for any information on this gun. Who made it and when was it manufactured? What does the # 340 stand for? We don't really know anything about it and would appreciate any information. Thank you

I've never heard of an 1864 US Navy Springfield, although I am familiar with the 1864 Springfield musket issued to the US Army. I'm wondering if it wasn't imported by "Navy Arms".

OK, that's what I thought. Navy Arms Company was the importer in Ridgefield, New Jersey. Your rifle is a Japanese-made replica of a US Model 1863 Springfield, Type 3, sometimes called a Model 1864. Originals were used by the US Army during the Civil War, not by the Navy.
It was likely made in the 1970's and used by a Civil War re-enactor. This is the bayonet and scabbard it uses:0 -

I bought one a few months ago that looks very much like that one except it is marked 1862 CS RICHMOND VA & was made in Italy.
The price was $550 plus $39.95 for the bayonet & $18.95 shipping.
I should have noted that there was no scabbard with the bayonet.0
