What is the story on Charles Daly?
I am looking for a low priced self defense shotgun for a woman living alone. The lowest price seems to be Charles Daly and Mossberg 500. However, I do not know anything about Charles Daly. The cost of the gun is coming out of my pocket so I am looking for cheap pump, but not cheap junk. ty

i have seen the mossberg 500 home defense, 18" barrel, for $280 at a local store. seven round of 00 buck will do the job. if that is too much $,look on the auction side for a used one. 0 -
Go with the Mossberg, they have been making them for years. The CD could be questionable, as chances are it will be a mediocre quality import.
That said, I would take the lady for a familiarization to a range prior to purchasing the shotgun. If she isn't familiar with firearms, instruction on loading, firing and safeing a shotgun would be beneficial, IMHO.0 -

This being the time for gun shows, lok around there, here on Gb, or at shops for a good used Mossberg or Remington 870. There are still good, used plain janes for $100 to $200. Also look for used youth or ladies models, they are out there, often for less $ in little used shape (youth model, as I assume she's of smaller stature than a man) 0 -
Look at the Maverick 88. Inexpensive mossberg without the tang safety. I have one that's dead reliable. You can get them, brand spanking new at walmart for $188+tax. Of course, you'll have to chop the barrel but that's simple enough. But, I've put a shells through mine that was covered in red clay mud, still fired 100%. For an inexpensive gun that needs to go bang every time and don't have to look pretty and need hundreds of different accessories, it's a good deal. BTW, when/if you chop the barrel, measure your 18" (make it 18.5" to CYA) then cut through the rib first. 0 -
I would skip both, and get a used Remington 870 Express pump shotgun. It is twice the gun, that either of those would be, and you most likely can find several on the auction side for under $200.00.

I got my D-I-L a Mossberg youth 20 ga with a 22"(?) screw in choke barrel. We put in the IC choke and use two 7/8 ounce #6 followed by two 1 ounce #4. Sleeve on the stock carries two of the #6 loads and 3 slugs. The nearest house is over 1/2 mile and the biggest problem is possums & skunks in the catfood. Having the gun w/o some good instruction and motivation may not be the best idea. I helped my son and DIL work out a plan for covering the entrances to their house from a bathroom not accessable from the outside. 0 -

Frankly, ANY of the above could work fine. (So could various models from Ithaca, Smith and Wesson, Hi-Standard, Winchester, and others).
I'd also take the Maverick over the Charles Daly in a low-end gun, but in the end you're really talking about a gun that's probably going to get VERY little use in terms of number of shells through it.
Remington IS the best built gun, but its also probably the most expensive, and frankly, I doubt there is any incremental benefit in spending more here. Its not like she's going to be competing with this gun or taking it hunting.
The most important things (and in fact ONLY important things) are to make sure that
a. The gun FITS this woman.
b. She knows how to work all the controls, including loading, unloading, safety, and trigger.
c. She knows gun safety.
d. She gets some practice shooting it at actual targets at different distances.
e. She's actually comfortable firing it!
Frankly a 12 gauge shotgun may be too much gun for some women (ie its heavy with pretty significant recoil, especially with 00 buckshot!).
I'd say before buying her ANY shotgun, make sure she's amenable to actually using one (ie take her out to actually shoot one). If not, a good .38 or .357 revolver may well be a better choice.0
