It could, most likely culprit when it doesn't go bang is one of three things, or a combination.
Ammo, Yugo surplus has a thick hard primer
Weak firing pin spring, replace it with a Wolff 22lb
Fossilized cosmolene inside the bolt body
It wouldn't hurt to check the headspace and firing pin protrusion too.

I have a Spanish M43 that does the same thing with hard primer Yugo surplus 8mm. I plan on getting a stronger Wolf spring but have not done so yet. You get a click, re-cock and click, re-cock again and click, them re-cock again and maybe a bang.

Well, I took everything apart and cleaned. Stoned rough spots, lubed and reassembled. No luck. Put a german bolt in rifle and bang. This german bolt has the 0.030 longer firing pin. Can someone help me idenify this surplus ammo. Bought it around 6 years ago in case lots. Packed in gray wooden box with spam can inside. Ammo is on silver colored 5 round strippers with 15 rounds to each brown cardboard box. Writing on box is who knows but here goes, "7,9 MM nyw4amn metak". Looks like 9/53 production.

Swap the firing pin springs, from the German to the Spanish and try it. The ammo is Yugoslav surplus.

Thanks 'Trap55', will swap spring tomorrow. Hope it's an easy to replace spring as I've got lots of that ammo and I'll never shoot it all up myself. The mauser belongs to my nephew with a 13 year old son just starting to shoot and loving it.

That's Yugoslav production. Quality is all over the place, depending upon year of manuf.

This rig sounds exactly like an M43 I briefly owned in the mid-80's: a bolt M/M & the headspace was GONE [xx(] .....
