Marlin 1895 XLR in 45-70

    NO, in a nutshell. The marlin 1895 is no where near as strong, as the Ruger #1. It might handle a few of the 40K handloads, but it is like driving a Chevy Colbalt 100 mph. It will not last long.

    Nice analogy, Tim! Check out Ken Waters reloading research for the 45-70 in Pet Loads. He gives a pretty clear pressure capability range for everything from trap-doors to Siamese Mausers. The Ruger is up there strength wise in the IV category, and the 1895 is in the level III...10 or 12 K PSI difference as I recall.
