Continuation of Colt 25 auto LOCKED TOPIC
Here is a picture of the Colt 25 Auto that I have that the topic was locked on before. What my qustion was is this...Is there any sure fire way to tell if this gun is factory original Nickle finish or a re-done version

Of course there is a sure-fire way: Write to Colt and request a factory letter which costs about $100 and will tell which features the gun shipped with. If it left the factory in nickel the letter will say so. 0 -
yeah I know that but they told me it would be at least 3 months out before thay can get it back to me, I was just wondering if any of the GB members knew real quick 0 -
IMHO the plating is not factory. My opinion is based on two factors. The unevenness of the Colt markings on the slide give the appearance of much wear prior to it being plated. Also the sharp edge on the top of the slide that has a copper color. This was the common way of plating many years ago. The metal was initially plated with copper prior to be either nickel or chrome plated. Colt didn't use this process when they plated their guns though.
EDIT #1, Just checked the Proofhouse site that gives DOM for Colt handguns. Your pistol was made in 1910. I believe it saw substantial use and wear prior to being refinished.0 -
that copper color as you point out is simply the lighting, there is no copper color at all. I am not sure what you mean by the uneveness of the markings 0 -
Looking at the patent dates I can see a difference in wear on the first dates but no wear to the nickel, which would indicate wear to the markings before the finish was applied. The depth of the stampings on the dates Dec 22 1903 and the Jan 25 1910 are also different but the finish wear looks identical. 0 -
OK first off yes that is a picture but it ask more questions then it answers in some respect........First off let look at one area the date APR 20 it looks like there is a scratch on the number 0 going from one O clock down going out the bottom at 7 O cloak. and a Bunch of scratches at the same angle near the front and below the word PATD. if t these are scratches and not just the picture or lint then because of the thickness of nickle Which is VERY VERY thin less then .001 inch the scratch would go through the nickle and into Bare metal. the picture looks like the bottom of the scratch is nickle in color if that is true then the pistol has been plated After the scratches were made on the pistol . I know we asked for pictures but we need better lighting . Natural lighting out side with no glare from all different angles. I am sending you the type of picture we need. I only have one nickle pistol but look at some of the others . 0 -
ok I will be looking for them. I can't figure it out becuase to het naked eye, you cannot even see those scratches on the gun 0 -
I don't know if its been refinished or not.
But I do know I still wouldn't trade it for a Taurus "judge"![8D]0
