F.C. Taylor Fur (Game) Getter .38 Cal

My father has one of these set guns. His father bought it when he was 16 years old in 1914 for $4. I have been trying to find out more about this gun but have been only able to find information on the .22 Cal model. I was told that the .38 Cal is rare but how rare? Does anybody know anything about this gun? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Because of the barrel length and other factors there might be a question regarding it's legality. I'm not familiar with the current federal regs concerning the Taylors. Before you do anything else get all your ducks in a row regarding this. Don't pay any attention to any internet Philadelphia lawyer, or gunshop commando, get a letter acknowledging it's legality from the feds, before you pursue this any further.

    Well, I'm not an Internet Philadelphia lawyer, but I did sleep in the dumpster behind the Holiday Inn Express last night. There I found a slightly soiled copy of Firearms Curios or Relics List (ATF P5300.11), & on page 38 they list both Taylor models under the category of "Weapons Removed from the NFA as Collector's Items and Classified as Curios or Relic under the GCA". That would indicate that your gun is perfectly legal to own.

    As for rarity or value, I haven't a clue.

    EDIT: I was able to find a few actual sales of the .22 version over the last several years in the $1,500-$1,800 range. I suspect that your .38 would bring even more than that; despite the economy, the high end collectors are still paying top dollar. Your gun was probably designed for use with black powder; with it's brass parts, I don't think I would chance firing it. Unless you can get a $1,000 appearance fee for pretending to sell it to Will at Red Jacket Firearms on the Sons of Guns TV show.

    I have looked much further into this gun and Neal is right it was removed of the list and is now considered a relic AND IS legal to own. So to answer that my duck are in a row. This gun is in excellent condition and would probably fire but we are afraid of wrecking it.

    After a little searching on the net, I found several that have sold at auction (not internet auction sites) for some very good money. $1400-$1800 for .22 versions. 38 is discussed on some sites as more rare and valuable, but the only one I saw sold went for under $500. Could be noone at that auction knew much about it.

    I did find that it is now illegal to use as originally intended now. (Trapping)

    These guns are in the Blue Book. The .22 version was made by Mossberg, the .38 is believed to have been made by Hopkins & Allen. Top price for the .38 in my 27th edition is $850, the .22 version is listed at $1050.
